Nagpur: A viral video capturing a heated altercation between a traffic violator and a bystander has triggered widespread outrage, prompting swift action from the Nagpur Police.
The incident, which occurred on April 9 along the Mankapur-Gorewada Road under Jaripatka police station limits, shows a head constable allegedly assaulting and abusing a civilian who questioned him for not wearing a helmet.
The head constable, identified as Anand Singh from Pachpaoli police station, was filmed allegedly manhandling the bystander who had advised him to wear the helmet placed on his two-wheeler. Contrary to Singh’s claim that the civilian used offensive language, the video footage reportedly shows the police personnel himself using abusive words.
Following public outcry, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 3) Mahak Swami took prompt action by suspending the head constable and ordering a departmental enquiry into the matter. A non-cognizable (NC) offence has also been registered at Jaripatka police station, confirmed PI Arun Kshirsagar. Additionally, the Traffic Department issued a challan to Singh for riding without a helmet.
Police sources said the head constable was returning from a dental clinic due to a toothache and hence was not wearing a helmet, but the justification has done little to quell criticism from the public, who condemned the alleged misuse of power.
In response to the incident, DCP Swami has announced the implementation of mandatory soft skills training for all police personnel in the zone. The initiative aims to improve public interaction and enhance accountability among the police force.
The incident has reignited discussions around police conduct and the need for better sensitivity training to ensure respectful and lawful behavior towards citizens.
