Nagpur: In a crackdown on illegal cricket betting during the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) season, the Crime Branch Unit 5 of Nagpur Police on Monday, April 28, apprehended a bookie involved in placing bets during the Rajasthan Royals vs Gujarat Titans match. The action was taken within the jurisdiction of Ajni Police Station, following reliable intelligence input.
The accused, identified as Amjad Khan Ahmed Khan Pathan (46), a resident of Plot No. 1054, Galli, Taj Nagar, near KMG Hospital, Ajni, Nagpur, was allegedly conducting a betting operation from the second floor of his residence on Manewada Road.
Acting on a tip-off, a police team of Crime Branch Unit 5 raided the location and caught the accused red-handed while he was accepting bets on the live IPL match. The team seized betting-related material valued at ₹1,83,700, including mobile devices and other tools used for online gambling.
A case has been registered at Ajni Police Station under relevant sections of the Maharashtra Prevention of Gambling Act (Sections 4 and 5). The accused and the seized materials have been handed over to Ajni Police for further legal proceedings.
