Nagpur: In a move that has taken many by surprise, 33-year-old IPS officer Nimit Goyal, a 2014-batch officer of the Maharashtra cadre, has resigned from his post to explore opportunities in the private sector. Goyal, who most recently served as the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) in Nagpur before being transferred to Mumbai, has decided to step down from his prestigious role in the Indian Police Service (IPS), which is known for being highly coveted and demanding.

Originally from a business family in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, Goyal achieved an All India Rank (AIR) of 164 in the highly competitive UPSC Civil Services Examination. Over the past decade, he has held a series of notable positions, including Additional Superintendent of Police in Sindhudurg and Commandant of the SRPF Group 4 in Mumbai. He also served as Superintendent of Police in Aurangabad before his transfer to Mumbai.

While Goyal’s career was marked by consistent achievements, his recent decision to resign has led to speculation about the reasons behind the shift. This isn’t the first time he has considered leaving the IPS; he previously submitted his resignation in 2022 but ultimately decided to withdraw it. His latest resignation, filed in July 2024, is pending approval from the Ministry of Home Affairs, a process that could take several months.

Goyal’s wife, Aanchal Goyal, serves as an IAS officer and is currently the Additional Commissioner in the Nagpur Municipal Corporation, making the couple well-known for their commitment to public service. Goyal’s departure from the IPS has generated interest, given the growing trend of civil servants, despite their high ranks, transitioning to private sector roles.

In a statement to the media, Goyal expressed his eagerness to embrace new challenges in the private sector, signaling a significant career shift. His resignation reflects a broader trend among civil servants who, after years of public service, are opting to explore new horizons in the corporate world.

The exact reasons for Goyal’s departure remain undisclosed, but his decision underscores the evolving dynamics of career choices among India’s top public servants.
