New Delhi: A domestic dispute in Delhi’s Nihal Vihar turned fatal on Monday after a 31-year-old software engineer was allegedly assaulted by his in-laws and later died in hospital.
The victim, Vinay Gupta, worked for Adobe in Noida and had a reported annual package of around ₹60 lakh. Police said the altercation began between Gupta and his wife, Rekha, over giving medicine to their child.
According to the family, Rekha left the house after calling her relatives. Around 10 minutes later, she returned with her two brothers, a sister-in-law, her father, her uncle and others. CCTV footage from the house reportedly captured the family arriving at the property before the assault.
Gupta’s mother, who was also in the house at the time, said she had stepped out briefly to arrange water and refreshments when the attack began. By the time she returned, she found her son being beaten. She tried to intervene and pleaded with the attackers to stop, but the assault continued, the family alleged.
The victim’s relatives claimed that Gupta was strangled and beaten on the chest and that the assault may have been pre-planned. They also alleged that the CCTV cameras in the house had been switched off before the incident.
After the attack, a neighbour was seen carrying Gupta on his shoulders to take him to hospital, while members of Rekha’s family remained nearby. Doctors declared him dead after admission.
Gupta had married Rekha about three and a half years ago. The couple had twin children, a boy and a girl, born around four and a half months ago. The family lived on the third floor of the house, while Gupta’s parents stayed on the lower floor.
Police have arrested four people in connection with the case: Rekha, her two brothers and her sister-in-law. The investigation is ongoing.
