Nagpur: Starting from the new school session on June 30, students returning to classrooms in Nagpur will notice an additional presence at school gates—traffic police personnel stationed alongside school staff to streamline student movement and reduce congestion during peak hours.

In a major traffic management initiative, the Nagpur Traffic Police has joined hands with 10 schools across the city to address persistent traffic chaos witnessed during school opening and dispersal timings. The campaign is being spearheaded by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Aditya Mirkhelkar.

Schools situated near busy roads and major intersections regularly face severe traffic jams, especially during morning arrivals and afternoon dispersal. Authorities observed that unregulated parking by school buses and private vans, along with random stopping for student pick-up and drop-off, frequently blocks roads and leads to long queues of vehicles.

As part of the pilot phase, schools including Bhavan’s, Centre Point School, Poddar School and Saraswati Vidyalaya have been selected for implementation.

Under the new arrangement, traffic police personnel will work in coordination with school security staff, while barricades and dedicated vehicle lanes will be created to regulate the movement of buses and vans. Vehicles will be required to queue systematically, allowing faster and safer boarding and deboarding of students.

Officials said the initiative is designed to reduce road blockages, improve traffic flow, and strengthen safety around school zones, particularly at sensitive junctions vulnerable to spillover congestion.

The programme forms part of Nagpur Traffic Police’s broader “Operation U-Turn” campaign, which focuses on strengthening traffic discipline and reducing road accidents across the city. If the pilot delivers positive results, the model is expected to be extended to more schools in Nagpur in the coming months.
