Nagpur: In a major step to tighten traffic enforcement and improve road discipline, Nagpur Traffic Police have announced the procurement of 1,200 traffic jammers, which will be deployed across all 12 traffic zones of the city. The move is aimed at curbing illegal parking and reckless driving practices that continue to disrupt traffic flow and endanger public safety, despite a notable decline in road accident fatalities.
According to official data, Nagpur recorded a significant reduction in road accident deaths in 2025 compared to the previous year, placing the city among the better-performing urban centres in Maharashtra on road safety parameters. Sustained enforcement drives and focused traffic campaigns have played a key role in lowering both fatal accidents and serious injuries.
However, traffic authorities concede that illegal parking remains a persistent challenge, particularly on arterial roads, highways and busy intersections. Poorly parked vehicles frequently lead to congestion, sudden traffic pile-ups and secondary accidents, undoing gains achieved through other enforcement measures.
To address this gap, the traffic department has opted for a technology-driven solution by introducing traffic jammers. These devices will allow enforcement teams to take swift action against illegally parked vehicles, especially in identified hotspot areas where obstruction to traffic movement is common. Officials said the jammers would act as a strong deterrent against habitual violators and improve response time on the ground.
Explaining the rationale behind the decision, senior traffic officials said the focus is not only on reducing accident numbers but also on ensuring smoother and safer commuting for citizens. While initiatives such as Operation U-Turn have successfully targeted high-risk behaviours like drunk driving, overspeeding and rash driving, illegal parking continues to undermine overall traffic discipline.
Under Operation U-Turn, data-based enforcement strategies led to sharp declines in fatal accidents in several zones, with some areas witnessing reductions of nearly 30% during intensive drives. Building on this success, the deployment of jammers is expected to strengthen enforcement against parking violations, which are often overlooked but have serious safety implications.
Traffic police have reiterated that enforcement will be strict and consistent, particularly against four-wheeler owners and commercial establishments that contribute to road blockages. At the same time, the department has stressed the importance of public cooperation, awareness and responsible driving behaviour to sustain improvements in road safety.
With the induction of 1,200 jammers, authorities hope to send a clear message that illegal parking and traffic indiscipline will no longer be tolerated on Nagpur’s roads.
