Nagpur: In a major step towards modernising criminal investigations, Nagpur Police will soon be equipped with a state-of-the-art forensic van capable of instant drug detection and advanced 3D crime scene reconstruction.

Faster Drug Identification at Crime Scenes

Investigating narcotics cases has traditionally been complex, as police often have to rely on lab reports to confirm whether seized substances are drugs. However, the new forensic van will significantly reduce this delay.

According to officials, the van is equipped with advanced FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared) technology, enabling officers to identify suspected narcotic substances on the spot. This will allow immediate action, instead of waiting for laboratory confirmation.

3D Digital Crime Scene Mapping

One of the standout features of the van is its ability to create a 360-degree, three-dimensional digital model of crime scenes. Using high-tech cameras, investigators can:

  • Scan entire locations in detail
  • Capture precise measurements and object positions
  • Record and store evidence digitally

This ensures that even the smallest details are preserved accurately for further analysis and court proceedings.

Push for Modern Policing in Maharashtra

The initiative aligns with directives from Devendra Fadnavis, who has emphasized the adoption of advanced forensic technologies under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita framework, where digital evidence plays a crucial role.

The Directorate of Forensic Science Laboratories (DFSL) has been actively modernising forensic infrastructure across the state. Currently:

  • 259 mobile forensic vans are deployed across Maharashtra
  • 8 of these are highly advanced units
  • Around 2,200 trained personnel are operating these systems

Maharashtra is considered among the leading states in India in terms of large-scale deployment of forensic vans.

Nagpur Among First Cities to Get Advanced Unit

Taking a step further, DFSL has introduced two ultra-modern forensic vans with additional features—one each for Mumbai and Nagpur. The Nagpur unit has already arrived, and staff training is currently underway. Once completed, the van will be deployed for active investigations.

Secure Evidence with Blockchain Technology

Another key feature is the use of Blockchain technology, ensuring that all collected evidence is securely stored and tamper-proof. This reduces the risk of evidence manipulation and enhances credibility in court.

Officials also highlighted that the system enables real-time data sharing between departments, improving coordination and efficiency during investigations.

Stronger Cases in Court

Speaking on the development, officials from DFSL stated that the integration of advanced technology will significantly improve accuracy, transparency, and reliability in criminal investigations. The digital documentation and secure storage of evidence will strengthen prosecution cases and judicial outcomes.
