Nagpur: In a major crackdown ahead of Eid al-Adha 2025, the Nagpur City Police rescued nearly 200 bovines from illegal confinement in Gandhi Nagar, Kamptee, on Thursday, June 5. The operation was led by DCP Zone V Niketan Kadam and targeted illegal cattle transport and suspected unlicensed slaughterhouses.
The rescue operation, carried out by Old Kamptee Police under PI Prashant Jumade and New Kamptee Police led by PI Mahesh Andhare, was launched near Bhaji Mandi in Gandhi Nagar. The teams discovered the animals held in inhuman conditions, and multiple vehicles used for their illegal transport were seized on the spot.
Sources said that no one claimed ownership of the rescued cattle, and vehicle owners are likely to be booked under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and relevant sections of the IPC. Several accused have already been identified, though they are currently absconding.
This major bovine rescue comes just days before Eid al-Adha, a period when illegal cattle smuggling activities tend to spike. The Nagpur Police have increased vigilance and are taking proactive action to curb the illegal trade. In a related development, Sadar Police recently externed seven cattle smugglers for 15 days to deter similar offences.
Under the guidance of Police Commissioner Dr Ravinder Kumar Singal, the city police have intensified efforts to tackle illegal cattle transport and slaughter in and around Nagpur.
