Nagpur: Dr. Ravinder Singal, Police Commissioner of Nagpur, has issued a prohibitory order aimed at curbing unsolicited and disruptive activities allegedly carried out by transgender groups in the city.
The order, effective from December 28, 2024, to February 25, 2025, addresses complaints of unlawful behaviour and harassment faced by citizens during personal and social occasions.
According to the order, it has come to the notice of the police that transgender groups often:
1. Visit homes uninvited during celebrations, weddings, funerals, or religious ceremonies, engaging in indecent or intimidating behavior to extort money.
2. Roam traffic junctions, crowded areas, and public spaces, coercing commuters and pedestrians into giving them money.
The order states that such actions constitute public nuisance, extortion, and unlawful assembly, offenses under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). However, due to fear or embarrassment, many citizens refrain from lodging formal complaints against these activities.
Prohibitions and Guidelines
1. Restricted Movements: Transgender groups are prohibited from visiting households or establishments during occasions like weddings, funerals, or childbirth unless specifically invited by the hosts.
2. Ban at Traffic Junctions: These groups are also barred from gathering at traffic signals, public junctions, or demanding money from commuters.
Penalties for Violations
Violations of these directives will result in action under multiple provisions of the BNS (2023) and the Maharashtra Police Act, including sections 223, 189(2), 191(2), 194(1), 270, and 308(3), among others.
Public Feedback Invited
