Nagpur: In a major boost to sustainable tourism, the Nagpur Metropolitan Region Development Authority (NMRDA) and Maharashtra State Power Generation Company Limited (Mahagenco) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop a world-class eco-tourism destination at Koradi in Nagpur district.
The agreement was formalised on Tuesday, September 16, in Mumbai in the presence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy CMs Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, Minister of State for Urban Development Madhuri Misal, Chief Secretary Rajesh Kumar, Additional Chief Secretary (Planning-1) Asimkumar Gupta, Energy Department Additional Chief Secretary Abha Shukla, CM’s Principal Secretary Ashwini Bhide, Mahagenco Chairman & MD Radhakrishnan B, and NMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner Sanjay Meena.
Key Project Details:
- Land Lease: Mahagenco will lease 232.64 hectares of its land to NMRDA for 30 years at a token annual rent of just ₹1. The lease covers areas in Mouza Koradi, Mouza Mahadula, Mouza Khaperkheda, Mouza Nanda (all in Kamthi taluka), and Mouza Ghogli (Nagpur Rural).
- Purpose: Development of a global-standard eco-tourism hub featuring water-centric, non-motorised recreational activities such as paddle boating, kayaking, canoeing, eco-friendly shikara rides, floating deck cruises, birdwatching platforms, and nature trails.
- Ownership & Rights: Mahagenco will retain full ownership and operational control of the existing thermal power station and wastewater treatment facilities. NMRDA will receive exclusive rights to use the lake surface for eco-tourism.
- Tenure Extension: The lease allows for an extension beyond the initial 30-year term.
Officials stated that the site’s proximity to Nagpur’s urban core and rich natural resources makes it ideal for an international-standard eco-tourism attraction. The project is expected to boost the local tourism industry, create employment opportunities, and drive socio-economic growth, all while strictly adhering to environmental protection norms.
