Nagpur: The Nagpur City Police achieved a major breakthrough after the Tehsil Police arrested a man for allegedly illegally confining cattle in cruel conditions for slaughter in the Hansapuri area of the city.

According to police, the incident came to light on May 15 at around 7.50 pm when a patrol team from Tehsil Police Station received specific information about cattle being tied and confined behind Shivaji Night School in Hansapuri Khadan.

Acting on the tip-off, police raided the residence of accused Mustakim Qureshi (32) in the presence of panch witnesses. During the inspection, officers found six bovine animals allegedly packed in a cramped space without fodder or water and subjected to cruel treatment.

Police said the accused had illegally confined the animals for slaughter. The team rescued all six cattle and seized them as property valued at around Rs 90,000. The rescued animals were later shifted to the Gaurakshan Kendra for care and protection.

Based on a complaint filed by PSI Suraj Sirsath, police registered a case against the accused under relevant sections of the Maharashtra Animal Preservation Act, 1976, amended in 1995, along with provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960. Further investigation is underway.
