Mumbai: Although the southwest monsoon has entered parts of the Konkan region, weather experts have indicated that widespread rainfall across Maharashtra is unlikely before at least June 15. Authorities have advised farmers not to hurry with sowing operations based on isolated pre-monsoon showers and localized thunderstorms.
According to the latest weather assessment, the monsoon has advanced into South Konkan, with Sindhudurg and Ratnagiri districts expected to receive moderate to heavy rainfall until June 9. However, forecasts suggest that both the intensity of rainfall and the pace of monsoon advancement across the state may weaken thereafter.
As a result, the likelihood of satisfactory and widespread rainfall across Maharashtra remains low for the next week, raising concerns among farmers preparing for the kharif sowing season.
Scattered Thunderstorms Likely in Several Regions
Meteorological forecasts indicate that parts of Vidarbha, Marathwada, Khandesh, and Central Maharashtra may experience cloud formation and scattered thunderstorms accompanied by rain during afternoon and evening hours until at least June 15.
However, officials noted that these rainfall events are expected to be isolated and unevenly distributed, making them insufficient to support large-scale agricultural sowing activities.
High Temperatures to Continue Across Maharashtra
Weather authorities have also predicted that maximum temperatures will remain elevated across several parts of the state until at least June 12.
- Vidarbha and Khandesh: Temperatures are likely to remain above 40°C.
- Marathwada: Maximum temperatures are expected to range between 35°C and 40°C.
- Several districts may continue to experience hot and humid conditions despite intermittent cloud cover and localized rain showers.
Government Advisory for Farmers
The Agriculture and Disaster Management Departments have issued a precautionary advisory urging farmers to avoid premature sowing based solely on forecasted thunderstorms.
Officials have advised farmers to:
- Avoid rushing into sowing operations based on short-duration thunderstorm activity.
- Wait for sustained and widespread monsoon rainfall before beginning large-scale crop planting.
- Monitor official weather forecasts and agricultural advisories regularly.
Lightning Safety Guidelines Issued
Citizens have also been warned to exercise caution during thunderstorms and lightning activity.
The advisory recommends:
- Avoid standing under trees during lightning strikes.
- Do not take shelter under tin sheds or temporary structures.
- Stay away from electrical transformers, power poles, and overhead power lines during thunderstorms.
- Move indoors immediately if lightning or severe weather conditions develop.
Monsoon Progress Being Closely Monitored
State authorities are closely monitoring the monsoon's progress and weather conditions. While the arrival of the monsoon in Konkan marks the beginning of the rainy season in Maharashtra, experts emphasize that the system has not yet become fully active across the state.
Farmers and residents are advised to rely on official forecasts rather than isolated rainfall events when making agricultural and travel-related decisions.
