Nagpur: In a shocking breach of family trust, a 22-year-old man was arrested for allegedly stealing cash and gold jewellery worth nearly ₹2 lakh from his grandmother's residence in Nagpur to meet expenses related to his romantic relationship.

The accused, identified as Tushar Pradip Maste (22), was apprehended by the Ganeshpeth Police within 24 hours of the theft being reported. Police also recovered the stolen gold ornaments and seized the remaining cash from his possession.

According to police officials, the complainant, Subhadra Kishor Maste (60), a resident of Indira Nagar near Shukrawari Lake, had kept ₹13,000 in cash and gold ornaments worth approximately ₹1.93 lakh in a cupboard at her home. The valuables included a gold chain, ring, and earrings.

The theft came to light after the cash and jewellery went missing sometime between May 30 and June 2. After conducting a thorough search of the house and failing to locate the missing items, Subhadra Maste approached Ganeshpeth Police Station and lodged a complaint.

Based on her complaint, police registered a case of theft against an unknown person and launched an investigation. During the inquiry, investigators discovered that the complainant’s grandson, Tushar, had visited the house shortly before the valuables disappeared.

Police detained him for questioning. Initially, he allegedly provided misleading information, but later confessed to the crime during sustained interrogation. According to investigators, Tushar admitted that he had stolen the cash and jewellery to spend money on his girlfriend and cover expenses related to their relationship.

Further investigation revealed that the accused had sold the stolen gold ornaments to a local goldsmith. Acting swiftly, police recovered the jewellery from the goldsmith and also seized the remaining stolen cash from the accused.

Officials said the prompt investigation and recovery of the stolen property helped solve the case within a day of the complaint being filed. Further legal proceedings are underway.
