NAGPUR: A 26-year-old lawyer was allegedly abused and assaulted by a man outside Nagpur Central Jail and later near Shankar Nagar Square after a confrontation on October 27. Dhantoli police have registered a case against the accused, identified as Amol Yewatkar (Patil), aged around 35.

According to the police report, the complainant, a resident of Ambazari, had gone to Nagpur Central Jail with his colleague, to submit a vakalatnama, a document authorising a lawyer to represent a client in court.

The accused, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, abused complainant and questioned his presence at the jail, asking him whether it was an appropriate time to visit the prison.

Later, when the victim was passing through Shankar Nagar Square, the accused allegedly arrived on a two-wheeler and began abusing him again. As the victim started recording the incident on his mobile phone, the accused allegedly approached him from behind, grabbed him by the neck and hair, and attempted to snatch his phone.

The accused also allegedly struck complainant on the forehead with a metal bangle, injuring him. The lawyer was subsequently treated at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), commonly known as Medical Hospital, in Nagpur.

Based on victim’s complaint, Dhantoli police registered a case under the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The accused was taken into custody, and police records indicate that he had no previous criminal history.
