Nagpur: Sharda Prasad Yadav, former Commissioner of Police (CP) of Nagpur and a tough enforcer known for cracking down on the city’s most feared gangsters, passed away at Hinduja Hospital in Mahim, Mumbai, on Saturday, May 24. He was 64.

An Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the 1986 batch from Uttar Pradesh, Yadav served as Nagpur’s Police Commissioner between April 2015 and August 2016. He earned a reputation for his uncompromising stance against history-sheeters and for bringing in crucial policing reforms. During his tenure, he launched aggressive action against dreaded gangsters Ranjit Safelkar, Santosh Ambekar, and Raju Bhadre — a milestone unmatched by his predecessors.

Yadav’s time in Nagpur was marked by a citizen-centric approach to policing. He spearheaded the Police Mitra initiative to involve citizens in crime prevention and launched social media-driven outreach through WhatsApp, Facebook, and Twitter (now X), making Nagpur Police more accessible and transparent.

Starting his career as Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in Thane Rural, Yadav went on to serve in key postings across Maharashtra, including Gondia-Bhandara, Parbhani, Mumbai, and Nanded. He also held significant roles such as DIG Prisons, ADG of CID in Mumbai, and served with the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).

His legacy includes a disciplined police force, people-first policies, and notable contributions toward public safety and law enforcement reform.

Current Nagpur CP Dr Ravinder Kumar Singal expressed deep sorrow at Yadav’s demise. “During my tenure as SP Nanded, SP Yadav was my IG. He was a taskmaster and a vocal officer. He always extended valuable guidance and support. I will definitely miss him and his teachings,” said Singal, remembering Yadav as a mentor and guide.
