Nagpur: A woman allegedly posing as a genuine customer stole gold jewellery worth ₹12.75 lakhfrom a jewellery showroom in Nagpur over nearly a month by repeatedly visiting the store, placing orders, and discreetly concealing ornaments while distracting the staff.

Ajni Police have registered a theft case and launched a search for the unidentified accused.

The complainant, Sahil Anilrao Ramteke (27), proprietor of Sahil Jewellers on Rameshwari Main Road in Kashi Nagar, told police that he has been running the gold and silver jewellery business since 2001.

According to the complaint, while conducting a stock verification, Ramteke noticed that several gold ornaments were missing. Suspicious of theft, he examined the shop’s CCTV footage.

The footage allegedly revealed that on May 23, 2026, an unidentified woman entered the showroom and asked the female staff to show her various gold ornaments. While the employees were occupied, she allegedly concealed a gold mangalsutra inside her blouse and walked out without paying.

Police said the woman returned to the showroom on May 27 to place an order for a short mangalsutra. Thereafter, she allegedly visited the shop every one or two days, purchased some jewellery to avoid suspicion, and repeatedly stole ornaments by taking advantage of moments when the female staff were distracted.

According to the complaint, the woman allegedly made away with gold chains and mangalsutras worth a total of ₹12.75 lakh, including multiple heavy chains and mangalsutras of varying weights.

Based on the complaint and CCTV evidence, Ajni Police have registered a case under the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Efforts are underway to identify and trace the accused woman using CCTV footage and other technical evidence.
