Nagpur: Two unidentified men allegedly posing as police officers duped an 82-year-old retired man of two gold rings and ₹4,000 cash, collectively valued at around ₹1.51 lakh, in Bajajnagar area of Nagpur on Monday.
According to the Bajajnagar police, the victim, Madhav Shrikrishna Pande (82), was returning home on his two-wheeler after purchasing vegetables from the market when the two accused, travelling on a motorcycle, stopped him near the security wall of the RPTS, opposite Laxmi Keshav Apartment in Laxmi Nagar, around noon on August 17.
The accused allegedly introduced themselves as police personnel and told Pandey that several robbery incidents had taken place in the area. They reportedly warned him against wearing gold rings while travelling and asked him to remove his jewellery.
Believing them to be police officers, Pande allegedly handed over his two gold rings and ₹4,000 in cash. The accused wrapped the valuables in a handkerchief and handed the bundle back to him, asking him to keep it safely.
Pandey placed the bundle inside his vegetable bag and continued towards his home. However, after reaching home, he opened the handkerchief and allegedly found that the gold rings and cash were missing.
The total value of the stolen property has been estimated at ₹1.51 lakh.
Based on Pandey’s complaint, the Bajajnagar police registered a case against the two unidentified men, aged around 40 to 45 years, under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Police are investigating the case and working to identify the accused.
