Nagpur: A recent incident in Shanti Nagar, where a group of weapon-wielding hooligans was caught on camera riding triple-seat and vandalising parked vehicles, has once again highlighted the growing threat of reckless two-wheeler riders in the city. While the culprits in this case were nabbed, many others continue to flout traffic rules with impunity, especially during late-night hours when police checking is minimal.
Residents say that even during the day, groups of three youngsters can be spotted riding two-wheelers dangerously in areas such as Sadar, Gittikhadan and Central Avenue. Non-functional CCTV cameras and the absence of traffic personnel at major intersections have only worsened the situation. These riders—often college students—are known for sudden lane changes, risky overtakes and hazardous manoeuvres. Though less frequent, young women have also been seen engaging in similar rash riding.
The city police’s road safety initiative, ‘Operation U Turn’, launched on July 10 under Commissioner of Police Dr. Ravinder Kumar Singal and led by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Lohit Matani, has successfully curbed drunk driving and reduced fatalities within just seven weeks. However, citizens are now urging authorities to mount a similar crackdown on triple-seat riding, which remains a key factor in many accidents.
DCP (Traffic) Lohit Matani confirmed intensified action against such violations. “Triple-seat riding endangers both the offenders and other commuters. We have steadily increased enforcement, issuing 25,345 challans in 2023 and 31,516 in 2024. This year, we have already surpassed last August’s figures,” he said, emphasising that strict action will continue.
With growing public demand for stronger measures, residents hope the next phase of ‘Operation U Turn’ will target the city’s triple-seat menace before it leads to more serious mishaps.
