Nagpur: In a devastating incident, five individuals—including four members of a Nagpur family—drowned in a deep water-filled pit at a stone quarry near Khapri Raja village in Umred tehsil on Sunday , May 11, afternoon. The deceased include two women, a young man, and two children.

The victims have been identified as Raju alias Ranjana Suryakant Raut (22), resident of Gujarwadi, Nagpur; Roshni Chandrakant Chaudhary (32), her son Mohit (10) and daughter Lakshmi (8), residents of Laxminagar, Dhule; and Ehtesham Mukhtar Ansari (20) of Mominpura, Nagpur.

According to police, Suryakant Raut, a tea vendor in Gujarwadi, was preparing for a housewarming ceremony. His daughter Roshni had traveled from Dhule to Nagpur with her children to attend the event. On Sunday, May 11, around 2 pm, Roshni, her children, younger sister Ranjana, and family acquaintance Ehtesham told relatives they were going for a walk.

When none of them returned home by late evening, a worried Suryakant Raut filed a missing person report at Ganeshpeth police station. Ehtesham’s family also alerted the police after his sudden disappearance. Both families conducted an overnight search among acquaintances but found no clues.

Tragically, around 2 pm on Monday, May 12, all five bodies were discovered floating in a water-filled pit near the Kuhi stone quarry. Police suspect that the group may have entered the pit to swim and accidentally drowned. Initial findings suggest that some may have lost their lives trying to save others.

Kuhi police have registered a case of accidental death and initiated further investigation into the incident.
