NAGPUR: Three men allegedly demanded monthly extortion of ₹3,000 from ambulance drivers operating near Mayo Hospital in Nagpur and damaged the windshields and windows of 10 ambulances after the drivers refused to pay. The accused also allegedly abused and threatened the drivers, with one of them brandishing a knife to intimidate the complainant.
According to the police complaint, the incident took place near the compound wall of the nursing hostel outside Mayo Hospital, under the jurisdiction of Tehsil Police Station.
The complainant, Sheikh Rehan, 20, an ambulance driver residing near Khajabhai Estate Noori Masjid in the Yashodhara Nagar area, had parked his ambulance at the spot after dropping off a body, as he routinely did. Around 10 other ambulances were also parked there.
The three accused, identified as Parvez Firoz Khan, 30, and Shoaib Firoz Khan, 25, both residents of Guard Line quarters, and Sonu alias Bawa, 35, who lives near a drain in Bengali Panja, allegedly approached the drivers and demanded ₹3,000 every month for operating their ambulances in the area.
When the ambulance operators expressed their inability to pay the money, the accused allegedly abused them and issued threats. They then allegedly used a wooden stick and other objects to smash the glass of all 10 parked ambulances, causing damage estimated at ₹16,500.
The accused also allegedly threatened Rehan at knifepoint before leaving the spot.
Based on the complainant’s report, Tehsil Police registered a case against the three accused under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Further investigation is underway.
