Nagpur: Amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, the Cyber Police in Nagpur have stepped up surveillance on social media platforms to curb the spread of fake news and provocative content. The crackdown comes in the wake of a surge in controversial posts related to ‘Operation Sindoor’, India’s strategic counter-terrorism response launched after the deadly attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives.
In a recent development, police apprehended Rejaz M Sheeba Sydeek, identified as the president of the Kerala chapter of the Democratic Students Union, over an objectionable Instagram post criticizing India’s stance on terrorism. Officials confirmed that immediate action was taken to prevent the circulation of misinformation that could disrupt communal harmony.
On Friday, Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis chaired a high-level security review meeting, where directives were issued to strengthen statewide preparedness, activate mock drills, and ensure district-level war rooms remain alert. A strong emphasis was placed on combating misinformation, particularly on digital platforms.
The Nagpur Cyber Police, led by Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Lohit Matani, have launched a full-scale operation to identify and act against individuals sharing false narratives or content that may provoke hostility. Special teams have been constituted to monitor online activities around the clock.
“Cyber police personnel have been directed to monitor and report any controversial or inflammatory posts related to the ongoing India-Pakistan conflict. Strict legal action will be initiated against those found promoting enmity or supporting anti-national narratives,” said DCP Matani.
Given Nagpur’s sensitive history with communal flare-ups linked to social media, authorities are on high alert. Citizens have been advised to avoid posting or forwarding unverified content, especially in WhatsApp groups, as such actions may lead to legal consequences.
DCP Matani further urged the public to depend on official sources like PIB Fact Check for verified updates and to act responsibly while engaging with content online.
