Nagpur: The Crime Branch has arrested a 24-year-old man for allegedly stealing gold jewellery and other valuables worth ₹27.78 lakh from his uncle’s residence in KTPS Colony under Koradi police station limits. Police recovered 230 grams of gold ornaments and a mobile phone from the accused.

The theft came to light on August 18 when complainant Sanjay Wamanrao Wankhede returned home and found that valuables kept in an iron cupboard were missing.

According to police, Wankhede had checked the gold jewellery in the cupboard around 11 pm on August 16. His wife and nephew, Shantanu Chandu Wankhede, a resident of Chandurbazar in Amravati district, were present at the house at the time.

The family stayed at home the following day. On the morning of August 18, Sanjay dropped Shantanu at a bus stand as he was leaving for his native village. After returning home around 10 am, Sanjay opened the cupboard and discovered that gold jewellery, gold biscuits, gold coins and silver utensils were missing.

Suspecting his nephew’s involvement, he approached Koradi police and lodged a complaint.

While Koradi police registered a case, Crime Branch Unit-6 began a parallel investigation. Acting on technical surveillance and other inputs, the team traced Shantanu and detained him within 24 hours.

During interrogation, the accused allegedly confessed to stealing the valuables from his uncle’s house. Police subsequently recovered 230 grams of gold ornaments and a mobile phone, collectively valued at ₹27.78 lakh.

The accused was handed over to Koradi police for further investigation and legal proceedings.
