Nagpur: Tiger Carcass Discovered in Kuhi Forest Range, Probe Initiated Under NTCA Guidelines

Nagpur: In a concerning development, decomposed remains of a tiger were found in the Pohara Beat of the Kuhi Forest Range under the jurisdiction of the Forest Development Corporation of Maharashtra (FDCM) on May 9, 2025. The carcass was discovered in Compartment No. 456 during routine fieldwork by forest personnel.


According to officials, forest staff had gone to the area in the morning for routine field operations. While returning in the evening, they noticed a piece of bone on the ground, raising suspicion. Upon closer inspection, they found a mound of soil covered with sticks. Digging at the site revealed partially decomposed skin and bones of an animal.


Due to poor visibility after sunset, further action was postponed until the next morning, in line with the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) of the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA).


On May 10, when the team resumed work, it was confirmed that the remains belonged to a tiger. Subsequently, a detailed investigation was carried out at the site under NTCA guidelines. Present during the procedure were NTCA representative Nandkishor Kale (AIGF, NTCA), CWLW representatives Rohit Karu and Udham Singh Yadav, Dr. Sujeet Kolandhat (Veterinary Officer, Gorewada Zoo, Nagpur), Lapik Khan (Livestock Development Officer, Mandhal), Uttam Sawant (General Manager, Nagpur Region), Ajinkya Ghatekar (Divisional Manager, Forest Project Division, Nagpur), Assistant Managers Shweta Rathod and Pravin Khande, Range Forest Officer Walsondre from Kuhi, and other concerned forest officials and staff.


Further investigation into the incident is ongoing. Assistant Manager Shweta Rathod has been appointed as the inquiry officer for the case.
