Nagpur: Love marriages in the city appear to face more challenges compared to arranged marriages, as revealed by data obtained from the Bharosa Cell. Over the last eight years, around 5,000 couples who defied societal norms to marry for love sought police intervention to resolve marital issues. In contrast, 11,087 individuals in arranged marriages also approached the Bharosa Cell for assistance with disputes during the same period.

From 2018 to 2024, 5,995 couples in the city opted for mutual separation through the Family Court, averaging two divorces per day.

Key Factors Behind Marital Conflicts:

Experts attribute ego clashes, suspicions of infidelity, financial stress, and household disputes as the primary reasons for these conflicts. However, counselors at the Bharosa Cell also emphasized that many couples successfully overcome these hurdles with the right intervention and counseling.

Pranali Pawane, a counselor, highlighted that early marriages often contribute to marital challenges.

“We have observed a rising trend of young marriages. At this stage of life, couples often lack the maturity to handle marital responsibilities. Financial stress and doubts eventually lead to conflicts,” she explained.

She added, “Given the lack of maturity, neither partner is willing to compromise or understand the other’s perspective. If the marriage is inter-caste, family opposition further exacerbates the situation.”

Challenges in Love Marriages:

Senior Police Inspector Seema Surve from the Bharosa Cell pointed out that love marriages often come with additional challenges.

“After love marriages, couples often approach us with complaints against each other. Promises made before marriage are often not kept, leading to disputes. In love marriages, parental support is often absent, which adds to their struggles. We try to mediate and resolve their disputes. While we succeed in some cases, we face challenges in others,” Surve said.

The rising number of separations in Nagpur reflects the modern pressures couples face, making counseling and intervention from support systems like the Bharosa Cell crucial in fostering marital harmony.
