Nagpur: Panic gripped passengers aboard an IndiGo flight from Mumbai to Nagpur on Saturday morning after the aircraft abruptly aborted its landing just seconds before touchdown at the Nagpur airport, triggering fear and confusion mid-air.
Flight 6E 5349, which departed from Mumbai earlier in the morning, was preparing to land when it suddenly gained speed and pulled back into the sky. The unexpected maneuver left many passengers visibly shaken. Some began praying, while others sat in stunned silence, fearing the worst.
According to a passenger on board, the pilot made an announcement minutes later, stating that the landing had been called off due to low visibility and the aircraft would attempt to land again after 15 minutes. The plane landed safely on its second attempt, bringing immense relief to the frightened passengers.
Airport authorities confirmed that poor visibility caused by heavy monsoon showers was affecting flight operations at the Nagpur airport. Several flights were delayed, and more disruptions were likely throughout the day. Parts of Maharashtra, including Pune and Nagpur, have been witnessing intense rainfall, with the India Meteorological Department predicting continued showers across western India.
This near-miss comes on the heels of multiple flight-related incidents in recent weeks. Just days ago, an IndiGo flight bound for Goa made an emergency landing in Mumbai due to engine failure, while another flight heading to Imphal returned to Delhi after detecting a technical snag. These back-to-back scares have heightened passenger anxiety amid increased scrutiny of aviation safety protocols.
The recent Air India crash in Ahmedabad on June 12, which killed 260 people, has further amplified concerns. Aviation watchdog DGCA is monitoring all such incidents closely.
As of now, IndiGo has not issued an official statement regarding Saturday’s incident in Nagpur.
