Nagpur: In a decisive step to ensure women’s safety during the festive season, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Zone 4 Rashmita Rao has rolled out a special initiative titled “Durga Marshals,” inspired by the vigilance of Goddess Durga. The pilot project, introduced under the guidance of Police Commissioner Dr Ravinder Kumar Singal, aims to crack down on eve-teasing and harassment throughout Navratri celebrations.
A dedicated team of 15 trained police personnel will patrol sensitive areas across Zone 4, including markets, college zones and popular Navratri venues. Working in both uniform and plain clothes, these officers will identify and take swift action against anyone misbehaving with women.
Launching the project at a formal event on Wednesday, Commissioner Singal said the presence of Durga Marshals will send a clear message that harassment will not be tolerated and could pave the way for similar squads in other parts of the city.
DCP Rao explained that incidents of harassment—especially targeting college-going women—have been on the rise and often remain unreported. “This Navratri we want every woman, whether a student, professional or devotee, to feel protected. Durga Marshals are a proactive step to achieve that,” she said.
The team will patrol key locations, respond promptly to distress calls and coordinate with local police stations for immediate action. Citizens are encouraged to cooperate and report any suspicious activity on women’s helplines or directly to the Durga Marshals.
With large crowds expected during the nine-day festival, police believe the initiative will act as a strong deterrent to “roadside Romeos” and reinforce their commitment to safeguarding women. If successful, the concept could be expanded citywide for future festivals and public gatherings.
