Nagpur: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that the above-normal rainfall experienced during the first three months of the monsoon season is likely to persist in September. Recent days have already seen a revival of rains in Nagpur and other districts across Vidarbha, with heavy downpours battering parts of West Vidarbha over the weekend.
According to the IMD's monthly outlook for September, the average rainfall across the country is expected to be above normal, reaching 109% of the long period average (LPA). The LPA for rainfall in September, based on data from 1971-2020, is approximately 167.9 mm.
In Nagpur, the cumulative rainfall from June to August has been around 762.3 mm, surpassing the normal average of 689.2 mm by 11%. Vidarbha as a whole has received more than 812.7 mm of rain, exceeding the normal 695.1 mm by 17%. Historically, Nagpur records an average rainfall of 183.7 mm in September, with about 9.1 rainy days, 7.5 of which typically involve thunderstorms.
This trend of increased rainfall is expected to continue, contributing to a wetter-than-usual end to the monsoon season.
