Nagpur: In a significant crackdown, Tahsil Police arrested a 34-year-old man for allegedly confining five bovine animals in cruel conditions for illegal slaughter in the Mominpura area.
The action was taken on March 15 between 1 pm and 1.15 pm after a police patrol team received credible information that cattle were being unlawfully kept at a residence on Mohammadiya Madrasa Road in Ansar Nagar, Dobi, Mominpura under the jurisdiction of Tahsil Police Station.
Acting on the tip-off, police conducted a raid at the house of Amin Meersahab Qureshi (34). In the presence of panch witnesses, officers found five bovine animals—both young and adult—crammed in a congested space without fodder or water and allegedly tied for slaughter in an inhumane manner.
Preliminary inquiry confirmed that the animals belonged to the accused. Police seized the five cattle and related material collectively valued at Rs 70,000 from the spot. The rescued animals have been shifted to a cow protection centre in Dhantoli for care and shelter.
A case has been registered against the accused under Sections 5, 5(A), 9 and 9(A) of the Maharashtra Animal Preservation Act, 1976 (amended in 1995), along with Section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960. Further investigation is underway.
The operation was carried out under the supervision of senior police officials of Zone 3 and Lakadganj Division.
