Bajaj Nagar police seize illicit liquor, Thar worth ₹19.16 lakh during NMC poll Code of Conduct

Nagpur: In a major enforcement action during the Model Code of Conduct ahead of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation elections, Bajaj Nagar police seized illicit liquor worth over ₹19 lakh and registered a case against two persons late Friday night.


According to police, the action was carried out on December 19, 2025, around 8.50 pm, near PVK Wine Shop on the road leading from Bajaj Nagar Chowk towards Abhyankar Nagar Chowk. The offence was formally registered in the early hours of December 20 at 2.17 am at Bajaj Nagar police station.


The complainant in the case is police head constable Nitesh Meshram, attached to Bajaj Nagar police station. He stated that while patrolling the area with staff as per senior officers’ instructions, a black Mahindra Thar SUV was spotted under suspicious circumstances near the wine shop. The vehicle was intercepted and searched in the presence of panch witnesses.


During the inspection, police recovered a large consignment of beer and foreign liquor being transported allegedly without a valid licence. The seized liquor has been valued at ₹1,16,290. Police also seized the Mahindra Thar four-wheeler, valued at approximately ₹18 lakh. The total value of the seized property stands at ₹19,16,290.


Two accused have been booked in the case: Sunil Shamrao Uike (54), a resident of Pandharabodi Trust Layout Road, Shiv Mandir area, Nagpur, and Yogeshkumar Dattuji Meshram (34), a resident of Loni village in Deoli taluka of Wardha district.


Police stated that the accused were allegedly transporting the liquor for illegal sale without permission, in violation of provisions of the Maharashtra Prohibition Act and relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. A seizure panchanama and electronic evidence formalities were completed on the spot.


The operation was conducted under the guidance of senior officers, including the Deputy Commissioner of Police of Zone 1 and officers of the Sonegaon division. Bajaj Nagar police officials and staff from the patrolling and investigation teams participated in the action.


Police have clarified that such strict checks and seizures are being intensified across Nagpur city to prevent illegal liquor distribution and inducements during the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct ahead of the civic elections. Further investigation in the case is underway.
