Nagpur: AIIMS Nagpur celebrated its 6th Foundation Day, highlighting six years of exceptional achievements in healthcare, medical education, research, and community service. The event, held at the institution's campus, was graced by the presence of Prataprao Jadhav, Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, who served as the Chief Guest for the occasion. The celebration was also attended by other notable dignitaries, including Padma Shri Dr. Vikas Mahatme, President of AIIMS Nagpur and former Rajya Sabha member, Shri Shyamkumar Daulat Barve, Lok Sabha MP, Dr. Ajeet Madhavrao Gopchade, Rajya Sabha MP, and Dr. Sanjay Paithankar, CEO & Managing Director of Right Health UAE.
The event commenced with a welcome address by Dr. (Prof.) Prashant P. Joshi, Executive Director and CEO of AIIMS Nagpur. A medal distribution ceremony followed, recognizing the academic excellence of MBBS students. The proceedings concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Mrunal Phatak, Dean (Academics).
Key Achievements and Expansion of Services:
Since its establishment in 2018, AIIMS Nagpur has rapidly developed into a premier tertiary healthcare center. In 2023, it recorded over 557,000 outpatient registrations, and this number grew to 520,077 by September 2024. The institute currently operates with 41 functional departments, including new super-specialty OPDs in medical gastroenterology and pediatric immunology, catering to over 4,404 patients daily.
AIIMS Nagpur's infrastructure includes 820 functional beds, of which 76 are ICU beds, and an average daily OPD census of 4,000-4,500 patients. The hospital has 19 operational OTs that perform 35-45 major surgeries daily, amounting to a total of 17,038 surgeries, including both major and minor procedures.
Notable Advancements and Milestones:
Recent advancements include the inauguration of a Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, PET-CT, and a state-of-the-art Endoscopy Unit. AIIMS Nagpur has achieved remarkable clinical milestones, such as 33 successful kidney transplants and five bone marrow transplants, the first of their kind in a public hospital in Maharashtra. It also introduced comprehensive transgender healthcare services, along with Tobacco Cessation and Sickle Cell Centres.
AIIMS Nagpur was the first institution to launch the "e-Vaidya" online consultation platform, making significant strides toward digitalizing patient services. Over 3,290 appointments were facilitated through the platform by May 2024. The institute has implemented 21 out of 23 CDAC modules, enhancing patient safety and reducing medication errors.
Commitment to Quality and Community Service:
AIIMS Nagpur's dedication to quality healthcare is evident through its recent accreditations. It became the first AIIMS to secure NABH entry-level accreditation in May 2023 and NABH accreditation for its Ethics Committee in February 2024. Its Clinical Biochemistry Laboratory received NABL certification, and the Cytology Laboratory was accredited by the Indian Academy of Cytologists in September 2024.
The institute's collaboration with NGO PATH led to the launch of the Tele SNCU initiative in Melghat, reducing sepsis cases and improving healthcare delivery in remote tribal areas. Other telemedicine initiatives like Tele-Manas and E-Sanjeevani have further broadened the reach of AIIMS Nagpur's healthcare services.
Educational and Research Excellence:
AIIMS Nagpur admits 125 MBBS students annually and offers 143 postgraduate medical seats across 22 specialties, along with courses in paramedical and nursing programs. The institute has made significant contributions to research, with 38 funded projects worth Rs. 14 crores and over 700 publications in peer-reviewed journals.
The institution is also strengthening collaborations with leading institutions such as CCMB Hyderabad and Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS), Nashik, and is set to establish a Centre of Excellence in Diabetes with the Novonordisk Foundation.
Future Expansion Plans:
Looking ahead, AIIMS Nagpur aims to expand its services by establishing multiple Centres of Excellence focused on clinical trials, rare diseases, advanced medical procedures like heart and liver transplants, and cochlear implants. Plans also include the setup of Assisted Reproductive Techniques (ART) Centres and a Sleep Lab, along with the acquisition of an additional 50 acres of land to support its growth.
