Nagpur: In a crackdown on establishments repeatedly flouting liquor laws, the Deputy Commissioner of Police Zone 1, S Rushikesh Reddy, has ordered the closure of Baba Saoji Restaurant, located at Hingna T-Point under the jurisdiction of Pratap Nagar Police Station, for a period of five days starting July 31, 2025.
The action was initiated under Section 142(2) of the Maharashtra Prohibition Act, following multiple complaints and a history of violations at the restaurant. Despite prior enforcement actions—including cases registered under Section 68 of the Maharashtra Prohibition Act (Cr No. 255/2024, 1393/2024, and 413/2024)—the establishment allegedly continued to allow customers to consume alcohol on the premises by providing space and materials for drinking.
Police reports state that the restaurant, operated by Vijay Laxman Paunikar, had failed to reform even after being booked thrice in the past year. Of the three cases, two are currently under judicial consideration while one remains under investigation.
Multiple social organizations had also raised concerns with senior police officials, alleging that such illegal activities at the establishment posed a threat to public order—especially with upcoming festivals and public celebrations approaching.
To prevent any potential law-and-order issues during the festive period, DCP S Rushikesh Reddyordered the five-day closure of the restaurant. The action was taken under the guidance of the Commissioner of Police, Joint Commissioner, and Additional Commissioner of Police (South Region), Nagpur City.
Earlier, two other restaurants—Hotel Bakasur and Apna Dhaba NH01 under Bajaj Nagar Police Station—were also shut down for 15 days following similar violations.
