Nagpur: In a remarkable example of how technology can restore lives, a mentally distressed teenage girl who had lost her identity was finally identified using the biometric system of UIDAI, bringing hope after nearly two years.

The girl, identified as Jyoti (17), was found in a severely distressed and hungry condition by police near the PWCN Colony area in Nagpur on September 22, 2024. Due to her mental health condition, she was unable to recall her home address or any personal details.

Officials from Nagpur Police handed her over safely to Asha Kiran Child Care and Support Centre in Masala, Nagpur, where she had been living under care and protection ever since. Despite continuous efforts, her identity remained unknown for a long time.

A breakthrough came on April 17, 2026, when authorities used the “Find Aadhaar” biometric feature available through UIDAI. By matching her thumb impression in the system, officials successfully traced her identity to records registered in Uttar Pradesh. The verification was later officially confirmed.

This biometric authentication proved to be a turning point, enabling authorities to reconnect Jyoti with her roots and pave the way for her safe return to her family.

Officials from the shelter home expressed gratitude to UIDAI and law enforcement agencies for their coordinated efforts in establishing her identity. With confirmation now complete, the Child Welfare Committee, local police, and legal authorities have initiated the process to reunite her with her family.

The Mumbai Regional Office of UIDAI highlighted that Aadhaar is not just a tool for identity verification but also a powerful instrument for social justice and humanitarian support. This case stands as a testament to how biometric technology can transform lives and restore lost identities.
