Nagpur: A 26-year-old man was found hanging inside his rented room in the Kotwali area of Nagpur, police said on Sunday. The incident came to light after the house owner noticed a foul smell coming from the room.

The deceased has been identified as Dhiraj Munnalal Verma (26), a resident of Mahakal Colony, Ward No. 15, near a primary Marathi school in Babupeeth, Chandrapur district. He had been staying as a tenant at a house owned by Vipin Kishor Ghotekar in Gawlipura, near Chitra Talkies, under the Kotwali police station limits, for the past two to two-and-a-half months.

According to the police, the complainant, Shivcharan Motilal Rohidas (44), noticed an unusual smell emanating from the tenant’s room on the day of the incident. He opened the window to check and allegedly found Verma hanging from the ceiling after tying a rope to it.

The complainant immediately informed the police by telephone. A police team reached the spot and initiated the necessary procedures.

Kotwali police registered an Accidental Death case under the relevant provisions, including Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and Section 174 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC).

Police have not yet ascertained the reason behind the extreme step. Further investigation is underway.
