NAGPUR: Several jewellers in Nagpur have allegedly received threatening letters and messages in the name of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi ahead of Diwali, prompting the Nagpur Sarafa Association to alert traders and coordinate with the police and state government over their security.

In a communication addressed to members, Nagpur Sarafa Association president Rajesh Rokde said he had received information that some jewellery traders in the city’s bullion markets had been sent threatening letters purportedly in the name of Lawrence Bishnoi, while attempts were allegedly being made to intimidate others.

Rokde stated that the matter had already been discussed with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The association has also taken up the issue with Nagpur Police Commissioner Vishwas Nangre-Patil, according to the communication.

The association has urged jewellers to immediately report any threatening phone calls, letters or messages they receive. Traders have been asked to inform the association directly or contact its secretary, Anshul Harde, or former president Purushottam.

Assuring traders of its support, the association said it was committed to working with the administration and police to ensure their safety. It also appealed to members not to panic and to cooperate with the authorities in addressing the matter.

The development comes ahead of Diwali, a crucial business period for jewellery retailers, when customer footfall and high-value transactions typically increase.

Association Issues Guidelines for Itwari Sarafa Market

Alongside the security concerns, the association has appealed to traders to help maintain smooth traffic movement in Itwari Sarafa Market and other jewellery markets across Nagpur.

Shopkeepers have been asked not to allow hawkers to occupy space directly in front of their establishments, as this could obstruct traffic. Traders have also been instructed to brief their security guards and employees about the issue.

If anyone refuses to comply despite being asked to move, traders have been advised to photograph the person and inform the association so that appropriate action can be pursued.

The association reiterated that the collective cooperation of traders was essential to maintaining both security and orderly movement in the busy jewellery markets during the festive season.
