Nagpur: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow Alert for Nagpur and nearby districts, warning of thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds over the next couple of days. The alert comes in the wake of intense weather activity across Vidarbha, which brought strong winds, rain, and hailstorms to many areas.

On Saturday, May 3, Nagpur city experienced a sudden spell of rain, strong winds, and hail, providing much-needed relief from the soaring temperatures. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) had already forecasted such conditions, placing Nagpur under a Yellow Alert.

Earlier, on Thursday, Bhandara district witnessed a hailstorm and recorded 5 mm of rainfall, which helped lower the maximum temperature to 36°C. Light showers also brought relief to other parts of Vidarbha, including Gadchiroli, Gondia, and Wardha, where daytime temperatures remained between 36°C and 39°C. In Nagpur, the mercury dipped below 40°C, offering residents a break from the intense summer heat.

Temperature Trends Across Vidarbha:

Over the past 24 hours, maximum temperatures across Vidarbha ranged from 37.9°C to 44.5°C—considered normal for this time of year. Minimum temperatures were recorded between 19.8°C and 28.2°C, also within the normal range.

Among the hottest districts, Akola reported the highest maximum temperature at 44.5°C, followed by Amravati at 42.8°C and Washim at 42.6°C.

Weather Systems Triggering Thunderstorms:

According to the IMD, the current weather changes are due to an upper air cyclonic circulation over northeast Rajasthan and adjoining northwest Madhya Pradesh. A north-south trough extends from Punjab to north Kerala, passing through Haryana, Vidarbha, Marathwada, and interior Karnataka. This trough, combined with the cyclonic circulation, is expected to trigger further thunderstorms, gusty winds, and isolated rain in the region.

Precautionary Measures Advised:

In view of the forecast, the IMD has urged citizens and local authorities to remain alert and take necessary precautions to ensure safety during adverse weather conditions. The Yellow Alert serves as a cautionary signal for potential disruption due to thunderstorms and wind activity.
