Nagpur: In a major breakthrough that averted a prolonged legal battle, the New Kamptee Police successfully mediated a resolution in a longstanding land dispute involving the Jagrut Hanuman Seva Panchkamiti and the Chandankhede family, owners of the land where the revered Hanuman Mandir in Ungaon (Neri) stands.
The conflict, which had the potential to escalate into a civil court case dragging on for years, was peacefully settled due to the timely and strategic intervention of Police Inspector Mahesh Andhale and his team from New Kamptee Police Station.
The Hanuman Temple, located in Ungaon (Neri), sits on a 1,600 sq. ft. plot reportedly donated by the Chandankhede family nearly 150–200 years ago, after a Hanuman idol was discovered in a nearby river. Over the decades, the temple has played a central role in the spiritual and social lives of local residents.
However, a recent ownership dispute erupted between Vinayak Krishnaji Chandankhede, the current legal owner of the land, and members of the Hanuman Temple committee. The disagreement reached the New Kamptee Police Station amid rising tensions and potential communal implications due to the religious nature of the property.
Realizing the gravity of the situation, PI Mahesh Andhale initiated dialogue between both parties. “We brought everyone to the table and explored alternatives that would help avoid an unnecessary legal battle. After detailed discussions and mutual understanding, both parties agreed on a new administrative structure for the temple,” he said.
As part of the settlement, the temple committee will now include five members from the Chandankhede family and eight members from the village, ensuring fair representation and joint responsibility for temple affairs.
Both the Chandankhede family and village representatives expressed their gratitude to the New Kamptee Police for their swift and balanced intervention.
PI Andhale praised the maturity shown by both parties, saying, “Disputes like these often evolve into bitter rivalries lasting generations. By setting aside ego and focusing on the greater good, they have set an example for the community.”
