Nagpur: A 28-year-old woman allegedly set herself on fire after sustained harassment for dowry by her husband and in-laws in Mahadula under Koradi police limits.

The deceased, Payal Akash Shahare of Siddharth Nagar (Ward No. 10, Mahadula), married Akash Prakash Shahare (30) on May 19, 2025. According to police, soon after marriage, Akash, his father Prakash Shahare (53), mother Alka Shahare (45), and brother Montu Prakash Shahare (25) repeatedly demanded money from Payal’s parental home and subjected her to verbal and physical abuse.

On September 13, following another argument over money, Payal allegedly poured diesel over herself and set herself ablaze around 8 p.m. Neighbours rushed in on hearing her screams and took her first to Mayo Hospital and then to Government Medical College and Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries on Tuesday.

Based on a complaint by her father Surjalal Kashiram Ambade of Tumsar, Gondia, Koradi police have booked all four accused under dowry-related provisions and arrested them.
