Nagpur: Nikhil Chandwani, a Nagpur-based activist leading efforts to rehabilitate displaced Pakistani Hindus in India, recently organized a special screening of the Bollywood historical film Chhaava for refugee children at a theatre in Jaisalmer. The initiative aimed to provide emotional relief and cultural enrichment to children who have endured hardship and displacement.

Chandwani has been actively involved in facilitating the legal process for Pakistani Hindus seeking refuge in India. “For the past two years, I have been working towards rehabilitating Hindus from Pakistan who have suffered inhumane treatment at the hands of locals. With the assistance of the Indian government, we are ensuring their safe homecoming and settling them in refugee camps in Jaisalmer and Jodhpur,” he said.

Helping Children Overcome Trauma

During his work with displaced families, Chandwani observed that children were particularly vulnerable to psychological distress. “Many of these children have experienced immense trauma, which has robbed them of a normal childhood. To provide them with a moment of joy and an opportunity to learn about their rich history, I organized a special screening of Chhaava. The film not only entertained them but also educated them about the legacy of Sambhaji Bhosale,” he added.

Around 50 children attended the screening and expressed their gratitude for the experience. Many shared how the movie helped them understand history while offering a brief escape from their daily struggles.

Beyond Rehabilitation: Ensuring Livelihoods

Chandwani’s efforts extend beyond bringing Pakistani Hindus to India. He is actively involved in their rehabilitation, ensuring that families have access to basic necessities and employment opportunities. “Providing a safe haven is just the first step. We are also helping them secure livelihoods through jobs at local shops, petrol pumps, and other establishments so they can rebuild their lives with dignity,” he explained.

The initiative has brought hope to many refugee families, reinforcing India’s commitment to providing shelter and a future to persecuted minorities.
