Nagpur Flyovers to Get Speed Cameras Amid Surge in Fatal Accidents

Nagpur: A recent fatal crash on Ramjhula flyover—eerily reminiscent of the 2024 Mercedes accident—has once again spotlighted the dangers of overspeeding and rash driving on Nagpur’s elevated roads. The absence of surveillance cameras on the flyover posed a challenge for the police, who had to depend solely on footage from nearby junctions to track the vehicle involved.

In response to the growing number of such incidents, the Nagpur Traffic Police and Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) are now taking concrete steps to enhance safety on flyovers. Under the Intelligent Integrated Traffic Management System (ITMS), speed monitoring cameras will soon be installed across major flyovers in the city.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Archit Chandak, confirmed the development, stating that a joint inspection by the Traffic Department and NMC had already been conducted. “Frequent fatal accidents on flyovers due to overspeeding and reckless driving have prompted us to act. Speed cameras will help monitor vehicle movements and deter violations,” he said.

While some flyovers in Nagpur are already equipped with CCTV systems, several cameras are currently out of service due to infrastructure work. DCP Chandak noted that many of these cameras were damaged during construction activities, and efforts are underway to restore them.

He also clarified that even without full coverage, footage from entry and exit points has been useful in investigating recent cases. “We are enhancing the surveillance network to ensure quicker response and better accountability,” he added.

Addressing the root causes behind rising accidents, Chandak attributed the trend primarily to human negligence. “Overspeeding, traffic rule violations, mechanical faults, and wrong-side driving are major contributors. We urge citizens to drive responsibly,” he said.

The installation of speed cameras is expected to bring greater discipline among motorists and serve as a critical tool in curbing dangerous driving practices on Nagpur’s flyovers.
