Nagpur: A tragic road accident in Italy’s Grosseto district has claimed the lives of a Nagpur-based couple, leaving their daughter critically injured and two other children hurt. The mishap occurred on State Highway 1 Aurelia, when the family’s van collided with a mini-bus carrying Asian tourists.

The deceased have been identified as Javed Akhtar (55), a resident of Civil Lines, Nagpur, and owner of Hotel Gulshan Plaza in Sitabuldi, along with his wife Nadra Gulshan (47). Their elder daughter, Arzoo Akhtar (22), sustained severe injuries and is reported to be in a critical condition, while their younger daughter Shifa Akhtar (20) and son Jazel Akhtar (14) were also injured in the crash.

According to preliminary reports, the accident took place when the van carrying the Nagpur family rammed into a nine-seater mini-bus on the northbound carriageway. Due to a delay in assistance, three passengers in the van—including the Nagpur couple—died on the spot.

The Akhtar family had traveled abroad for a holiday and were on a sightseeing trip near Grosseto when the tragedy struck. Local authorities confirmed that the survivors were rushed to nearby hospitals for urgent treatment.

The incident has sent shockwaves through Nagpur, particularly among the hotel industry circle, as Javed Akhtar was a well-known entrepreneur in the city. Family members and relatives have expressed deep grief over the sudden loss and are reportedly making arrangements to travel to Italy.

The Indian embassy in Rome is coordinating with local officials to assist the injured and facilitate further procedures.
