Nagpur: An electric Aapli Bus operated by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) collided with a car near Balbharti Square on Tuesday evening, damaging both vehicles and raising fresh concerns over the growing number of accidents involving city buses.
According to reports, the accident took place around 5.25 pm on May 16 when the electric bus running between Sitabuldi and Savarmendha rammed into a car near the busy square.
Police and eyewitnesses said the car bearing registration number MH-31-FE-8043 was reversing at the time when the electric Aapli Bus approached from behind and hit the vehicle before moving ahead. The impact caused damage to the rear side of the car, while the bus also suffered minor damage in the collision.
Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported in the incident.
The electric bus involved in the accident, registered as MH-40-DC-4026, was being driven by Sagar Wasnik during the second shift when the mishap occurred.
This marks the second accident involving an Aapli Bus within a span of two days in Nagpur. On Monday morning, another city bus was involved in a head-on collision with a tipper truck near Jhansi Rani Square.
Transport experts and commuters have expressed concern over the rising number of accidents involving electric buses in the city. Experts believe the near-silent movement of electric buses, combined with inexperienced newly trained drivers, could be contributing factors behind such mishaps. Authorities are expected to review safety measures and driver training protocols in view of the recent incidents.
