Nagpur: A 55-year-old woman from Amravati district was arrested for allegedly setting a car on fire outside a bus driver’s residence in Nagpur’s Godhni area following a long-standing personal and financial dispute. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of May 30, created panic among local residents and triggered a swift police investigation that led to the accused through CCTV surveillance and mobile tracking.
According to police, the car belonging to Nikhilesh Krishnarao Rajurkar (35), a resident of Phagoji Layout in Godhni, was parked outside his house when it was set ablaze around 3.30 am. Neighbours noticed flames engulfing the vehicle and immediately alerted Rajurkar, who informed the police and fire brigade. The fire was subsequently brought under control using water, preventing further damage in the residential area.
During the investigation, police teams reviewed CCTV footage from multiple locations in and around the locality. Footage captured at approximately 3.09 am showed a suspect pouring a flammable substance on the vehicle before setting it on fire and fleeing the scene. Investigators reportedly examined footage from nearly 20 to 25 CCTV cameras before identifying the suspect as a woman.
Using mobile phone location analysis and technical surveillance, police traced and detained Pushpa Kashiram Amale (55), a resident of Jenpur village in Daryapur taluka of Amravati district.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Amale and the complainant are distant relatives and have family connections in the Godhni area. Police also learned that Amale’s husband was murdered in the Mankapur area around 15 to 20 years ago.
During questioning, the accused allegedly claimed that Rajurkar had borrowed money from her and failed to repay it. She further alleged that he did not treat her properly whenever she visited Nagpur. However, Rajurkar denied the allegations before investigators.
Police suspect that the alleged financial dispute and strained family relations may have motivated the accused to commit the act of arson. Further investigation is underway to verify the claims made by both parties and determine the exact circumstances leading to the incident.
A case has been registered, and police are continuing their probe into the matter.
