Nagpur: In a decisive move to rein in drunk driving, Nagpur Traffic Police are expanding the ambit of Operation U-Turn by intensifying surveillance outside nightclubs, bars, and lounges across the city. The crackdown comes amid rising cases of motorists driving under the influence, especially in Civil Lines and other nightlife-dominated zones.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Lohit Matani informed that police teams will now be stationed near popular party destinations, mapping common exit routes and setting up surprise checkpoints to nab offenders before they hit city roads.

“Despite repeated appeals, we continue to see individuals drive under the influence after leaving clubs and bars. To address this, we are deploying teams strategically across all 10 zones of the city,” Matani said.

Between July 10 and July 18, under the ongoing Operation U-Turn, traffic police booked 336 motorists for drunk driving while checking over 1,339 vehicles. The Indora Division led the enforcement drive with 71 violators, followed by Sonegaon (42), and over 40 each in Kamptee and MIDC divisions. Other areas including Sitabuldi, Sadar, Cotton Market, Lakadganj, Ajni, and Sakkardara also witnessed stern action.

DCP Matani stressed that violators would face legal consequences under the Motor Vehicles Act, including heavy fines, license suspension, and potential criminal charges. He also issued a public appeal urging citizens to take responsibility.

“We are not against partying,” he clarified. “But ensure you tag along a driver or book a cab. Your safety and the safety of others on the road matters more than anything else.”

With city traffic police stepping up vigil at party hotspots, weekend revelers are advised to rethink their post-party commute plans — before it’s too late.
