Nagpur: In a determined move to curb drunk driving and prevent road accidents, Nagpur City Police has intensified its traffic enforcement under the ongoing campaign titled ‘Operation U-Turn’. Launched on July 11, the campaign specifically targets drivers under the influence of alcohol, especially those commuting late at night from bars and nightclubs.

According to the city’s Traffic Department, special nakabandi drives were conducted between July 10 and July 18, during which 336 offenders were booked for drunk driving, and a total of 1,339 vehicles were checked across key traffic divisions in the city. The highest number of offenders were caught in the Indora Division (71), followed by Sonegaon, Kamptee, and MIDC, where over 40 violators each were penalised. Other divisions including Sadar, Sitabuldi, Cotton Market, Lakadganj, Ajni, and Sakkardara also contributed significantly to the action.

The traffic police have observed that a large number of motorists, particularly those visiting bars and nightclubs in Civil Lines and other high-traffic areas, continue to drive under the influence despite repeated warnings. In response, police teams have begun identifying common exit routes from nightlife hubs to strategically place checkpoints and intercept intoxicated drivers before they can cause harm.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Lohit Matani has directed all field officers to use breathalysers in every suspected case, instructing them not to rely solely on the smell of alcohol to determine intoxication. The move comes as part of a larger strategy to implement stricter enforcement and build a strong deterrent against drunk driving.

While the number of violators caught so far may seem moderate, the initiative has succeeded in boosting police visibility and public awareness. Officials say the presence of checkpoints and stricter checks is discouraging many from taking the wheel after drinking. The campaign is set to continue with enhanced manpower, particularly on weekends and late-night hours.

Nagpur Police has appealed to all citizens to act responsibly and avoid drunk driving. Strict legal action, including license suspension, fines, and criminal charges, will be taken against violators under the relevant provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act.
