Nagpur: The Government Railway Police (GRP) has registered an FIR against Santosh Arkhel, brother of BJP Yuva Morcha general secretary Rishabh Arkhel, in a growing controversy over alleged extortion of contract workers at Nagpur railway station. The action comes three days after workers complained of being forced to return 50% of their wages under threats and intimidation.

Workers Allege Pressure, Salary Cuts and Murder Threats

As per the complaint, a group including Santosh Arkhel, Shubham Arkhel, Shahbaz Khan and Manish Chipel had been pressuring station watering and cleaning staff for the past two weeks. The accused reportedly claimed the contract was under their control and instructed workers to hand over half of their monthly salary or face transfer or termination.

Workers said that after their salaries were deposited by ISF Services Company, Santosh and Shubham repeatedly called them, demanding the amount back. Some victims also alleged they received murder threats, which created fear among their families.

Acting on the complaint, the GRP registered a case under Section 308(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with extortion and criminal intimidation.

GRP Delay Sparks Protest Led by Shiv Sena (UBT)

The victims reportedly approached Shiv Sena (UBT) city chief Nitin Tiwari after receiving threatening calls. When the GRP allegedly delayed action, Tiwari escalated the matter to MLC Anil Parab. Following his direction, Tiwari led the workers to gherao the GRP police station, demanding immediate action.

During the protest, the police recorded workers’ statements. The victims also handed over audio and video recordings said to feature the accused demanding money.

Action Begins After SP Mangesh Shinde’s Intervention

Despite the evidence, no FIR was filed for three days. Tiwari again reached out to MLC Parab, who contacted GRP Nagpur SP Mangesh Shinde directly. Shinde instructed the police to register the FIR without delay and provide a copy to the complainants.

Sources say the submitted video also shows a BJP leader present at the scene. Police are now analysing call recordings and expect more names to emerge as the investigation widens.

The FIR has revived focus on the alleged extortion network operating at the station, with the probe now gaining pace after initial delays.
