Nagpur: In a significant stride towards digitalization, power consumers in the Nagpur circle under MSEDCL (Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Co. Ltd.) have increasingly adopted online platforms for electricity bill payments. In April 2025, 65% of low-tension (LT) electricity consumers across the circle paid their bills digitally, marking a notable shift in consumer behavior.
According to MSEDCL data, a total of 12,98,733 consumers in the Nagpur circle paid electricity bills worth ₹229.06 crore in April. Of these, 8,47,404 consumers made digital payments amounting to ₹222 crore. This reflects an impressive 11% year-on-year growth in the number of online-paying customers compared to April last year.
Nagpur district led the trend with 67.7% (7,19,805) consumers paying bills worth ₹194.50 crore online. In Wardha district, 56.39% (1,27,599) consumers paid ₹27.50 crore through online modes.
Several divisions including Butibori, Congress Nagar, Civil Lines, Umred, Gandhibagh, Mahal, Mauda, and Katol in Nagpur district, as well as Hinganghat in Wardha district, saw over 60% of consumers preferring online payments.
MSEDCL attributed this success to the easy-to-use digital facilities offered through its website, mobile app, QR codes printed on bills, and the MahaPowerPay platform. Consumers can pay via debit cards, UPI, payment wallets, net banking, and even credit cards (though credit card payments may carry charges). Except for credit card transactions, all other digital payment modes are currently free of cost.
Additionally, online bill payments come with a 0.25% monthly discount (up to ₹500 per bill), providing further incentive to users. Payments are secured under the RBI’s Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007, and e-receipts are sent to the registered mobile number via SMS after every transaction.
To encourage digital adoption further, MSEDCL has also launched a ‘Lucky Digital Consumer’ scheme where online bill payers stand a chance to win attractive prizes such as smartphones and smartwatches.
Urging all low-tension power consumers to switch to online payments, MSEDCL emphasized the advantages of safety, convenience, discounts, and reward opportunities that come with digital transactions.
