Nagpur: In a significant development, Mahak Swami and Rashmita Rao, both from the 2020 batch of the Indian Police Service (IPS), have been appointed as Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCP) in Nagpur for the first time. Swami will oversee Zone 3, while Rao has been assigned to Zone 4, two of the city’s most crucial and sensitive areas in terms of law and order.

After completing their probationary period as Assistant Superintendents of Police, both officers have now been promoted to the rank of DCP. Their appointments mark a historic moment for Nagpur as these critical zones are now being managed by young female officers.

Zone 3, under Swami’s supervision, includes the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) headquarters and Nagpur’s largest market, making it a highly important area for maintaining security. Zone 4, under Rao’s command, is known for its high crime rates and presents unique challenges to law enforcement.

This is the first time that such pivotal zones have been entrusted to women officers of this experience level. Previously, senior officers like DGP Rashmi Shukla and Nirmala Devi, who was on deputation with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), managed Zone 3. Rashmita Rao becomes the second female officer to lead Zone 4, following Sharda Nikam.
