Mumbai: In a first-of-its-kind development in India, the Dharamveer Swarajya Rakshak Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Coastal Road in Mumbai has been officially designated as the country’s first musical road. The unique feature was inaugurated on Wednesday near Amarsons Garden in the presence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
The innovation allows vehicles passing over specially engineered road strips to hear a musical tune—specifically the iconic “Jai Ho” song from the Oscar-winning film Slumdog Millionaire. The melody becomes audible when vehicles maintain a speed of 60–70 km/h.
Hungarian Technology Powers the Musical Road
Developed using advanced Hungarian road-music technology, the system relies on 500 meters of musical ribs installed in the first phase. These strips create sound through friction between the vehicle’s tires and the road surface, generating musical notes that are heard inside the vehicle without any external speakers.
Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, former MP Rahul Shewale, BMC Additional Commissioner Avinash Dhakne, and Hungary’s Consul General Frank Jari were present during the demonstration ride in which CM Fadnavis experienced the musical roadway firsthand.
“A Blend of Technology and Culture,” Says CM
Calling it an innovative and culturally significant concept, CM Fadnavis said the musical stretch on the coastal road represents a fusion of global technology and Indian music, adding that the feature is expected to draw curiosity from across the country.
“Motorists driving on the right lane of the coastal road will enjoy a unique musical experience. This is a novel concept using updated Hungarian technology, and passengers can hear the tune of ‘Jai Ho’ without any additional device,” Fadnavis said.
